The Interior of the Basilica

The baroque trim, added in the 16th century, was removed to restore the interior to its medieval simplicity.

The arches to the left and to the right

of the sanctuary were reopened.

This is a view of the sanctuary before the restoration.  Note that there are no windows on the inside of the sanctuary.  The windows were filled in when baroque trim was added in the 16th century.

The windows of the sanctuary were

again opened.  The painting above the windows (a late addition) was removed in the restoration.
